Total Marks: 24(Subjective Type)Time: 25 min
2.Write short answers to any Eight (8) questions:[8 × 2 = 16]
- (i)What is an Operating System? Give examples.Ans: An operating system is system software that manages computer hardware and software resources and provides services to programs and users. Examples: Windows, Linux, Android, macOS.
- (ii)Define multi-user environment and where it is used?Ans: A multi-user environment lets many users use the same computer or server at the same time, each with their own account. It is used in servers, banks, universities and network systems.
- (iii)What is meant by the architecture of an operating system?Ans: It is the structure of the OS: how its parts (hardware layer, kernel, middle layer and user interface) are arranged and work together.
- (iv)Describe the role of Middle and Upper layer.Ans: The middle layer (kernel, system libraries, device drivers) manages processes, memory and devices and connects software to hardware. The upper layer gives the user interface (shell, GUI or CLI) through which users and applications use the OS.
- (v)Differentiate System Libraries and Device Drivers.Ans: System libraries are collections of ready-made functions that programs use to request OS services (e.g. libc). Device drivers are programs that let the OS communicate with a specific hardware device (e.g. printer driver).
- (vi)What is the importance of Process management?Ans: It creates, schedules and ends processes, shares the CPU fairly among them, and prevents conflicts, so many programs can run smoothly together.
- (vii)Give some advantages and disadvantages of FCFS.Advantages: simple, easy to implement, fair order of arrival. Disadvantages: short processes may wait behind long ones (convoy effect) and average waiting time can be high.
- (viii)What is the difference between Primary Memory and Virtual Memory?Ans: Primary memory (RAM) is physical, fast chip memory with limited size. Virtual memory is a part of the hard drive or SSD used as extra RAM; it is larger but slower.
- (ix)Why is the operating system referred to as the "central controller"?Ans: Because it controls and coordinates all hardware and software, deciding which program uses the CPU, memory and devices, and when.
- (x)How is Kernel different from Shell?Ans: The kernel is the core of the OS that works directly with hardware. The shell is the interface that takes user commands and passes them to the kernel.
NOTE:- Give Detailed Answer of given Question.[8×1 = 8]
3.
Explain the process lifecycle in detail with examples.
Ans: The process life cycle is the series of states a process passes through from creation to termination.
New→Ready→Running→Waiting→Ready→Terminated
- New: the process is being created (e.g. you double-click a program).
- Ready: loaded in memory and waiting for the CPU.
- Running: the CPU is executing its instructions.
- Waiting (Blocked): waits for an event such as keyboard input or a file read, then returns to Ready.
- Terminated: the process has finished or was closed, and its resources are freed.
